San Francisco · ninety miles west
A store that reads as calmly as the product does.
Gradient is a California brand in San Francisco, about ninety miles west of Sacramento — near enough to share a market, far enough that we will name the actual city.
It sits in the comfort and sleep category, where the storefront has to feel like the thing it sells rather than shout over it. Restraint is harder to build than volume.

Farm country on every side, and a port that ships rice.
Sacramento sits in the middle of some of the most productive farmland in the country. The conditions a store here is selling in, each with where it comes from.
Farms in every direction
The Sacramento region is surrounded by 1.5 million acres of farms and ranches growing more than 160 crops, which is the basis of its claim to be America's Farm-to-Fork Capital.

Rice, on half a million acres
The Sacramento Valley has about 500,000 acres of rice fields, which the rice growers' commission says mimic the wetlands California lost.

A port that ships rice
The Port of West Sacramento, on a deep-water ship channel to the Bay, lists rice exports and cement imports as its primary cargoes.
Start here
Get the store built — or get the one you have selling better.
A build is one project: the design and theme, your catalog, the move off whatever you’re on now, and a launch somebody watches. From $10,000 one-time, and you own every bit of it.
Already on Shopify? Shopify Growth keeps the store improving month to month, from $2,250/mo. Ads, email, search and testing go on top when they’ll pay for themselves.
Questions, Sacramento edition.
Are you actually in Sacramento?
We're a remote agency, so there's no office to visit anywhere — ours or anyone else's. Our people are spread across the US and we run on video calls, which is how we'd work with you either way. Our nearest California client is ninety miles west in San Francisco, and we will name the city rather than saying 'the Bay Area' and hoping.
We're an agriculture or food brand. Does that change the build?
It changes the catalog and the shipping. Perishable and seasonal products need availability that tells the truth, and a Sacramento Valley brand often has genuinely variable stock — so the store has to handle 'back in July' gracefully rather than showing a dead product page for eight months.
Is being outside the Bay Area a disadvantage?
Not for selling. It shows up in hiring and in photography, where the Bay has more of both, and those are things you can buy across a ninety-mile gap. No customer has ever chosen a brand because of which side of the Delta it shipped from.
Farm-to-fork is the whole city's pitch. Does it still sell a product?
On its own, no — it's on every menu in town, so it reads as wallpaper. What sells is the detail behind it: which farm, which county, when it was picked. Sacramento is surrounded by more than 160 crops, so a shopper here has heard the slogan. Give them the specifics and it starts working again.
We sell rice or another Valley staple. How do we compete with the grocery shelf?
Not on price. The shelf wins that every time. The store wins on where it's from and on convenience: a Sacramento Valley grower can show the field, sell the sizes a supermarket won't stock, and put the reorder on a subscription so nobody has to remember to come back.
Where we work
Sacramento and the valley on both sides.
Sacramento is close enough to the Bay to share its talent and far enough to escape its rent, which is why a lot of food and agriculture brands are based here rather than west of the Carquinez.
We’re a remote agency with a home base in Norristown, Pennsylvania — the team is spread across the country, with a good chunk of it on the west coast. Everything runs on video calls, so you get the same people and the same hours whether you’re downtown or an hour out of it.
