Portland, OR

Shopify design and development for Portland brands.

Looking for a Shopify agency in Portland? Start with what actually needs doing: build the store, redesign the one you've outgrown, or market it once it's live with ads, email, search and testing. For brands doing six to eight figures a year.

Selling from Portland

Outdoor gear, valley wine and nearly every American hazelnut.

Portland makes more of what people wear outside than anywhere its size. The conditions a store here is selling in, each with where it comes from.

  • Apparel and outdoor, in bulk

Greater Portland counts 518 apparel and outdoor establishments and 23,000 people working in the industry, by the regional economic development group's figures.

  • Wine country, a short drive

The Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 wineries — two-thirds of Oregon's — and they're between ten minutes and two hours from Portland.

  • Nearly every American hazelnut

Oregon produces 99% of the hazelnuts grown in the U.S. and ranks among the top five hazelnut producers in the world.

Founder-led · value-first email

Growth that didn't flatten the brand's voice.

A Brighter Year is a founder's coloring concept with a therapeutic voice worth protecting, up against legacy publishers for attention. Portland makers who care more about how the thing is made than how fast it scales will know that tension.

We built the storefront, then an email program that gives value before it asks for the sale — growth that argues for the product rather than shouting over it.

And a store of its own

Modified Tot

A nursery brand that made its name on Etsy, now scaled on its own Shopify store — budgets raised in small steps, and only when performance held. Good company for a Portland maker who'd rather grow carefully than fast.

Get the store built — or get the one you have selling better.

A build is one project: the design and theme, your catalog, the move off whatever you’re on now, and a launch somebody watches. From $10,000 one-time, and you own every bit of it.

Already on Shopify? Shopify Growth keeps the store improving month to month, from $2,250/mo. Ads, email, search and testing go on top when they’ll pay for themselves.

Questions, Portland edition.

Are you actually in Portland?

We're a remote agency, so there's no office to visit anywhere — ours or anyone else's. Our people are spread across the US and we run on video calls, which is how we'd work with you either way.

Our customers are on both sides of the Columbia. Do our ads know that?

Only if someone set them up to. Target Oregon and you've quietly switched off Vancouver, which is the same city to everyone except the ad platform. We target the metro rather than the state, and it's the first thing we check when a Portland campaign's reach looks oddly small.

We make everything by hand and can't scale ads. What should we do instead?

Email, and better product pages. A Portland maker brand with a real constraint on volume should not be buying reach it cannot serve — the money goes further making each visitor more likely to buy and more likely to come back, which is exactly what the ad account cannot do.

We're a small outdoor brand in the same town as the giants. How do we compete online?

By not trying to out-spend them. Greater Portland has more than 500 apparel and outdoor businesses, and the big ones own the broad searches. Pick the narrow use your gear is best at, make the product page answer the fit and weather questions a shop assistant would, and build the email list that lets you sell the next drop without paying for the audience twice.

We make a hazelnut product. Is “Oregon hazelnuts” worth leading with?

Yes — 99% of the country's hazelnuts are grown in Oregon, so it's one of the few origin claims that's both true and already familiar to the shopper. Put the farm and the valley on the page, sell gift sizes before the holidays, and put the pantry sizes on a subscription.

Where we work

Portland and the Washington side of the river.

Portland punches far above its size in maker brands, and a lot of them care more about how the thing is made than about how fast it scales. That is a legitimate strategy and it changes what the store has to argue.

We’re a remote agency with a home base in Norristown, Pennsylvania — the team is spread across the country, with a good chunk of it on the west coast. Everything runs on video calls, so you get the same people and the same hours whether you’re downtown or an hour out of it.
